Wings

24 Dec 02 The wings are currently on order with Van's and should arrive sometime around 24 January week of 10 Feb 03. For now, the only thing happening is the construction of the wing construction rack.

6 Jan 03 Here's a couple shots of the wing rack.  I understand that the new pre-everythinged kits don't require the use of a jig (as such), more like a basic rack to hold the wing during construction. I'm cramped on space and anything on rollers is a bonus. I do have the capability to level as necessary and check washout . The uprights still need to be finalized and I'll do that when the kit arrives. Overall, the rack is constructed out of 1x6's because it was really difficult to find nice 10' 2x4's that weren't warped and twisted. The 1x6's were actually very straight. When reinforced, they become very rigid.

Sure could use any comments before I head down this road. The only thing left to do is swab the deck before getting into the next phase as the white floor gets a bit dirty with AL dust, air tool spittle, primer, etc...

I was lucky enough to have a local RV-8 builder, who was returning from OR with empty space in his truck, to pick up the kit at Van's. The down side was that it rained. Alot. There was a good bit of wet paper, but no problems with the kit.

All that's left is to rivet the lower skins on. Gary Sobek, Tech Counselor, and soon-to-be AB-DAR flew up to do the inspection. No problems! Following classic EAA Chapter 1000 picture protocol, we strike the required pose...

12 Mar 04 Made up the cradles for the wing stand. This is going to work out well.  Note that the cradles for each end just slip into the legs. For now they're going to rest on the floor until both wings are done.

24 Jul 04 Completed the second wing. Took about 350 hours total to complete both wings. Ready for the fuselage!
